1. Crawlability and indexation
Confirm your robots.txt isn't unnecessarily blocking legitimate search or AI crawlers, submit a clean XML sitemap, and check for accidental noindex tags on important pages. This is the most basic prerequisite. A page that can't be crawled can't be cited, no matter how well-written it is.
2. Server-rendered content
Keep your most important content, headings, body copy, key facts, available in the initial server-rendered HTML instead of requiring JavaScript execution to appear. Many crawlers, including several AI retrieval systems, render JavaScript inconsistently or not at all, which can leave client-side-only content effectively invisible.
3. Structured data
Implement accurate schema.org markup relevant to your content type, Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, Article, BreadcrumbList, validated against current guidelines. Structured data gives machines an explicit, unambiguous description of your content instead of forcing them to guess.
4. Content structure
- Use question-based H2/H3 headings that match how customers actually phrase queries.
- Place a concise, direct answer immediately under each heading before expanding into detail.
- Use lists, tables, and defined steps wherever content is naturally enumerable.
- Maintain a clear, logical heading hierarchy (one H1, properly nested H2s and H3s).
5. Entity consistency
Make sure your business name, address, phone number, and description are identical across your website, Google Business Profile, and any directories or third-party listings. Inconsistency is one of the most common, and most avoidable, reasons AI systems under-represent an otherwise legitimate business.
6. Performance
Fast-loading, mobile-optimized pages still matter, both for user experience and because slow or broken pages are less likely to be fully crawled and indexed. Optimize images (modern formats like WebP/AVIF), minimize unnecessary JavaScript, and keep an eye on Core Web Vitals.
