What is GEO?
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the discipline of improving how likely a business is to be mentioned, cited, or recommended by generative AI systems. Unlike traditional search, which returns a ranked list of your pages, generative engines synthesize a single answer from many sources, and quietly decide, source by source, whether your business earns a mention.
How generative engines decide what to cite
Generative AI systems typically combine a trained language model with retrieval mechanisms that pull in current, relevant information at answer time. When deciding what to include in a synthesized answer, these systems tend to favor sources that are:
- Topically comprehensive. They cover a subject in depth, not just touch on a keyword.
- Consistent and corroborated. The same facts repeated accurately across multiple credible sources, not just claimed once by the business itself.
- Clearly attributable to a real, identifiable entity. A business the system can confidently describe (name, location, services) without ambiguity.
- Demonstrative of first-hand expertise. Original data, frameworks, or experience that can't be found duplicated elsewhere.
What GEO actually involves
- Topical authority mapping. Identifying the full breadth of a topic a business needs to cover credibly, not just isolated keywords.
- Entity consistency. Making sure your business is described the same way, accurately, everywhere it appears online.
- Original content development. Building genuinely new value (data, frameworks, expert commentary) instead of rehashed information.
- Citation and digital PR. Earning legitimate third-party mentions that back up the facts you want associated with your business.
GEO vs. AEO
AEO and GEO are closely related but distinct. AEO focuses on structuring individual pieces of content to be directly extractable as an answer (think featured snippets, AI Overviews). GEO focuses on the broader authority, entity, and citation signals that decide whether a generative engine trusts and mentions your business at all, independent of any single page. Most businesses need both, sequenced together.
How to measure GEO progress
Because generative engines don't publish rankings, GEO progress is typically measured through structured, repeated prompt testing across major AI engines to track mention frequency and accuracy, monitoring referral traffic from AI platforms where it's available, and tracking the growth of legitimate citations and mentions across the web. None of these are perfect proxies, and none should be reported as guaranteed outcomes. They're directional indicators of whether the underlying signals are improving.
