What is AEO?
Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) means structuring web content so it can be pulled out directly and presented as an answer, in Google's featured snippets and AI Overviews, in voice assistant responses, and in chatbot answers. Instead of optimizing purely for ranking position, AEO optimizes for extractability: can a machine pull a clean, accurate, standalone answer out of your content?
How answer engines choose an answer
Answer engines look for content that satisfies a query concisely and unambiguously. They typically favor passages that directly address the question asked, appear near a matching heading, use clear formatting (a short paragraph, a list, a table, a defined term), and come from a source the engine already treats as credible on the topic.
A page that discusses a topic thoroughly but never states a clean, quotable answer gives the engine nothing to extract, even when the underlying expertise is genuinely strong.
How to structure content for AEO
- Use question-based headings. Phrase H2s and H3s as the actual question a customer would type or ask, "What is the best hotel in Kigali for business travel?" rather than "Our Accommodations."
- Answer immediately, then expand. Place a concise, direct answer (roughly 40 to 60 words) right after the heading, before going into supporting detail.
- Use lists, tables, and steps wherever the content is naturally enumerable. They're easier for both engines and humans to scan.
- Define terms clearly when you introduce specialized vocabulary.
- Add FAQ sections addressing the specific follow-up questions customers actually ask, marked up with FAQPage structured data where it genuinely applies.
AEO vs. traditional SEO
AEO is best understood as a specialization within SEO, not a replacement for it. Traditional SEO practices, technical health, relevant keywords, backlinks, are still necessary. AEO adds a specific formatting and structuring discipline on top, aimed at the extraction layer rather than the ranking layer alone.
Common AEO mistakes
- Burying the answer several paragraphs into marketing copy instead of stating it upfront.
- Writing vague, non-committal answers to avoid seeming overly promotional. Vagueness reduces extractability just as much as burying the answer does.
- Skipping structured data (FAQPage, HowTo) where it's genuinely applicable.
- Treating AEO as a one-time project instead of an ongoing content discipline.
